Salmonid Hybrids and Their Impact on the North Coast of California
Session Coordinator: Sterling Méus, Marin Water
Interspecies hybridization between salmonids is a relatively niche and new evolutionary tactic in this part of California. This session will address some of the environmental factors that are thought to cause this phenomenon. We will also discuss some of the morphological differences between hybrid individuals and their non-hybrid counterparts. As we discuss the environmental factors that contribute to this we will also dive into some of the possible genetic and environmental effects that having hybrid individuals and hybrid populations will have in the area. Presentations so far are planned to be on the hybridization between spring run and fall run chinook salmon in the Trinity river, and on the Coho/Chinook Hybrid populations that have been sighted off the coast of British Columbia.
