34th Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference Call for Proposals

 
The 34th Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference will be April 6-9, 2016 at the River Lodge in Fortuna, CA. SRF is now accepting proposals for concurrent sessions, field tours, and workshops. 
 
Proposals should include the name and contact information for the  proposed coordinator, a description of the session, field tour, or workshop and a list of potential collaborators/presenters. Field tour proposals should include a proposed itinerary and a description of types of restoration projects to be showcased. 
 
Please send conference workshop, tour, and session proposals to abstracts@calsalmon.org by July 24th.  
 
The Call for Abstracts will be open from August to October.

Registration is Open for the 18th Annual Coho Confab
 

The 18th Annual Coho Confab will be held August 21-23 at Westminster Woods in Western Sonoma County.
 
 
You can also register by mail. Complete the registration form and mailing it along with payment to PO Box 784 Redway, CA 95560.
 
The Coho Confab is a restoration practitioner's symposium to explore innovative methods to restore coho salmon habitat and work collaboratively for recovery. 
 
Keynote presentations will cover the following topics:
 
  • The Social Dimension of Saving Salmon
  • Restoring Landscape Hydrology
  • Conservation Hydrology, Pondering, Planning and Implementation
 
Field tours will focus on:  
 
  • Conservation Hydrology
  • Exploring Willow Creek and Multi-threaded Wetland Channels
  • Warm Springs Hatchery Tour and Dry Creek Restoration Projects
  • Salmon Restoration in the Dutch Bill Watershed
  • Roofwater Harvesting and Streamflow Restoration
  • Green Valley Creek Off-Channel Habitat
  • Grape Creek Watershed Tour
 
Workshops will include a Navigating Water Rights clinic and a Field Guide to Central California Coast Coho Recovery Open Forum. 

North Coast Water Rights Workshop

SRF will be hosting the next water rights workshop at the Willits Community Center on August 11th. For additional information, contact water@calsalmon.org.
 
This water rights workshop is just one in a series that will take place in the next year that will highlight the necessary steps to come into compliance with California water law.
 
The workshops will explain riparian and appropriative rights, the CDFW 1600 permit process, the advantages of filing, the distinction between county regulations and state water law, and how to calculate and project future water usage. They will also highlight why water conservation, planning, and stewardship are important for salmon and steelhead.
 
SRF and Trout Unlimited are available to coordinate water rights workshops upon request. Contact water@calsalmon.org for additional information.

Erosion and Sediment Control BMP Workshop

SRF and Pacific Watershed Associates will offer a BMP workshop on September 16th in Mendocino County. Location TBD. For additional information, contact water@calsalmon.org.
 
This workshop will train watershed restorationists, wardens, and landowners in erosion control techniques, upslope remediation, and BMPs for grading. This workshop will focus on identifying and evaluating sediment sources, assessing environmental impacts from accelerated erosion and sediment delivery, designing and procuring grading plans, and the environmental permit application process and requirements. The workshop will include a field tour of road remediation sites in Mendocino County.

Spring-run Chinook Symposium Postponed 

The Spring-run Chinook Symposium is postponed until next year, but you can participate in the Spring-run dives on the Salmon River July 8-9.
 
SRF will be offering a Spring-run Chinook session at the 34th Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference and we look forward to hosting this event in Chico next year. 

Salmon and Watershed Job Opportunities

City of Santa Cruz Water Department is currently seeking an Environmental Projects Analyst. The application period closes July 2nd at 5 pm.
 
Sanctuary Forest, a land trust based in Whitethorn, is currently seeking an Education, Development and Administrative Assistant. The application period closes July 7th.
 
CDFW has up to four Scientific Aid positions available for conducting drought-related monitoring surveys in Mendocino, Humboldt, and Del Norte counties. Contact David Kajtaniak or Seth Ricker for additional information on how to apply.

Proposition 1 Grant Funding

The Wildlife Conservation Board was granted $39 million this year fro Stream Enhancement Flow projects.
 
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife was granted $37 million this year for watershed restoration projects through the newly organized Watershed Restoration Grant Program
 
The Department of Water Resources has over $75 million for several distinct funding programs including Integrated Regional Water Management, water Conservation, and Groundwater Management Planning.
 
The State Water Resources Control Board has multiple programs related to drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, and groundwater. 

Simplified Permitting for Restoration Through AB 2193

The Habitat Restoration and Enhancement Act (AB 2193) is now in effect statewide
 
CDFW offers a faster and simpler pathway for qualified restoration projects as an alternative to Section 1600 Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreement permits and Section 2081 California Endangered Species Act (CESA) incidental take permits.

 CDFW Drought Solicitation

Applications must be received by July 31st at 5 pm.
 
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is now accepting grant applications for anadromous salmonid restoration projects that address impacts of the ongoing drought.  

Mattole Salmon Group's Steelhead Dives

This year's Mattole Summer Steelhead Dives will July 17- 18.
 

South Fork Smith River Fish Counts

The Smith River Alliance invites all swimmers and wild fish enthusiasts to participate in this year's Fish Count, August 7-9 at Rock Creek Ranch. Camping is available to participants beginning the afternoon of August 7th and ending the morning of August 9th.

AFS Fish Passage Class

September 14-18, 2015 in Sacramento, CA the California-Nevada Chapter of American Fisheries Society will be offering a workshop on fish passage and fish screening considerations for planning, design, and operation with eight instructors from the NMFS, CDFW, and CDWR. Registration cost is $627.92 for California/Nevada chapter members and $833.95 for non-members. Register online here.
