Register Today for the 18th Annual Coho Confab 

The 18th Annual Coho Confab will be held August 21-23 at Westminster Woods in Western Sonoma County.
 
 
You can also register by mail. Complete the registration form and mailing it along with payment to PO Box 784 Redway, CA 95560.
 
The Coho Confab is a restoration practitioner's symposium to explore innovative methods to restore coho salmon habitat and work collaboratively for recovery. 
 
Keynote presentations will cover the following topics:
 
  • The Social Dimension of Saving Salmon
  • Restoring Landscape Hydrology
  • Conservation Hydrology, Pondering, Planning and Implementation
 
Field tours will focus on:  
 
  • Conservation Hydrology
  • Exploring Willow Creek and Multi-threaded Wetland Channels
  • Warm Springs Hatchery Tour and Dry Creek Restoration Projects
  • Salmon Restoration in the Dutch Bill Watershed
  • Roofwater Harvesting and Streamflow Restoration
  • Green Valley Creek Off-Channel Habitat
  • Grape Creek Watershed Tour
 
Workshops will include a Navigating Water Rights clinic and a Field Guide to Central California Coast Coho Recovery Open Forum. 

34th Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference First Call for Abstracts

The 34th Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference will be April 6-9, 2016 at the River Lodge in Fortuna, CA. SRF is now accepting proposals for concurrent sessions, field tours, and workshops. 
 
 
You can also download the First Call in a PDF format. Keep in mind that the Call for Abstracts may evolve slightly between the First and Final Call. 
 
Presenter abstracts are due on October 6, 2015.
 
SRF's Call for Abstracts is highly competitive and not all proposals can be accepted. Presentations that have not been given before at our conference will  have priority, and we recommend submitting your abstract early for review. 
 
To submit an abstract, please fill out this online form and then mail your abstract to abstracts@calsalmon.org. Receipt of your submission will be acknowledged by email and forwarded to the correct session chair. 

North Coast Water Rights Workshop 

SRF will be hosting the next water rights workshop at the Willits Community Center on August 11th. Click here to register.
 
The workshop will explain riparian and appropriative rights, the CDFW 1600 permit process, the advantages of filing, the distinction between county regulations and state water law, and how to calculate and project future water usage. They will also highlight why water conservation, planning, and stewardship are important for salmon and steelhead. 
 
SRF and Trout Unlimited are available to coordinate water rights workshops upon request. Contact water@calsalmon.org for additional information. 

Erosion and Sediment Control BMP Workshop

SRF and Pacific Watershed Associates will offer a BMP workshop on September 16th in Mendocino County.
 
 
This workshop will train watershed restorationists, wardens, and landowners in erosion control techniques, upslope remediation, and BMPs for grading. This workshop will focus on identifying and evaluating sediment sources, assessing environmental impacts from accelerated erosion and sediment delivery, designing and procuring grading plans, and the environmental permit application process and requirements. The workshop will include a field tour of road remediation sites in Mendocino County.

Proposition 1 Grant Funding

The Wildlife Conservation Board was granted $39 million this year for Stream Enhancement Flow projects. Proposals are due by September 30th. 
 
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife was granted $37 million this year for watershed restoration projects through the newly organized Watershed Restoration Grant Program
 
The Coastal Conservancy is pleased to announce a new round of competitive grants to fund multi-benefit watershed restoration and ecosystem protection projects. These grants will be funded by the Proposition 1 Water Bon approved by California voters last fall. The proposal solicitation is due on September 30, 2015.  
 
California Department of Fish and Wildlife will be posting their Prop 1 PSN in early August and the solicitation will be open for 6 weeks.
 
CDFW has updated their Frequently Asked Questions addressing the Prop 1 solicitation. 

Water Wise Workshop in Arcata

Lauren Allen, author of The Water-Wise Home: How to Conserve, Capture, and Reuse Water in Your Home and Landscape and founding member of Greywater Guerillas, will be speaking August 24th at 7pm at the D Street Neighborhood Center in Arcata. This event is sponsored by Friends of the Arcata Marsh, the City of Arcata, the Northcoast Environmental Center, and Humboldt Baykeeper.


Contracting Position with NOAA Fisheries

NOAA Fisheries is hiring for a Restoration Specialist Contractor. This position will support restoration project planning and implementation activities under the NOAA Community-based Restoration Program (CRP), and Damage Assessment Remediation and Restoration Program (DARRP) as well as NOAA's involvement in the California Fisheries Restoration Grant Program. South Fork Smith River Fish Counts

The Smith River Alliance invites all swimmers and wild fish enthusiasts to participate in this year's Fish Count, August 7-9 at Rock Creek Ranch. Camping is available to participants beginning the afternoon of August 7th and ending the morning of August 9th.

AFS Fish Passage Class

September 14-18, 2015 in Sacramento, CA the California-Nevada Chapter of American Fisheries Society will be offering a workshop on fish passage and fish screening considerations for planning, design, and operation with eight instructors from the NMFS, CDFW, and CDWR. Registration cost is $627.92 for California/Nevada chapter members and $833.95 for non-members. Register online here.
