CA Watershed Forum September 20, Sacramento

Please join this roundtable discussion to create a statewide watershed program. Invited speakers include California Secretary for Resources Mike Chrisman, Assembly members Laird and Huffman. Confirmed speakers include John Lowrie from the CALFED Bay-Delta Program Watershed Program Manager and Martha Davis from Inland Empire Utility Agency who will wrap up the forum and discuss the next steps to creating a CA watershed program. North Coast Integrated Regional Water Management Plan (NCIRWMP) Conference in Fortuna, 
October 10-12


The North Coast Integrated Regional Water Management Plan (NCIRWMP) is holding a conference in Fortuna October 10-12 The North Coast IRWMP places a strong emphasis on salmonid habitat restoration, and is expected to be a conduit for substantial watershed based funding – both of which may be of interest to SRF members. California Water Policy Conference November 14-15 in Los Angeles

The 17th Annual California Water Policy Conference put on by Public Officials for Water and Environmental Reform (POWER) will be held on November 14-15 in LA. This year's conference is entitled, "Climate of Change: From Sizzle to Substance" and will focus on climate change and other pressing environmental issues that affect water management. Salmon Protection and Watershed Network (SPAWN) is hiring a Riparian Habitat Restoration Intern for a full-time position from October, 2007 through January 2008. Responsibilities include overseeing all native plant nursery projects and planning and coordinating restoration projects along tributaries in the undammed headwaters of the Lagunitas Creek Watershed (San Geronimo Valley).

The Mattole Restoration Council, based in Petrolia, Humboldt County, CA, seeks a Contract Coordinator to assist in managing our various contracts. The Contract Coordinator will work from 32 to 40 hours per week and may work from Petrolia and/or Arcata.
The Contract Coordinator tracks income and spending on some of MRC’s many environmental restoration projects. These projects are funded by state agencies and require exact compliance with contract obligations and reporting guidelines.

SRF Fish Passage Short Courses in Santa Cruz November 7-9 and Sonoma County November 13-15

SRF, DFG, and Fish Net 4 C will offer two intensive workshops for engineers, hydrologists, biologists, and environmental planners, and other staff who are involved in the design and implementation of fish passage projects. The workshop will cover the design and implementation process, including biological considerations, site surveys and geomorphic assessment, state and federal fish passage design guidance, stream simulation design, grade control techniques, retrofitting existing crossings, contracting and implementation, monitoring and adaptation. Instructors include Mike Love, Ross Taylor, and Ken Kozmo Bates. In addition, DFG staff will provide instruction on the DFG/NOAA design standards, and local county staff will be available to present case studies. The workshops include two days in the classroom, comprised of presentations, group exercises and local case studies and a third day will feature field visits to local projects, and a specialized half-day workshop targeted specifically for engineers to explore in more detail the calculations used to develop successful designs.

26th Annual SRF Conference Coordinator Abstracts Due September 27

The 26th Annual Conference Salmonid Restoration Conference will be held March 5-8, 2008 in the northern San Joaquin Valley. The conference will feature all day field tours of Tuolumne River restoration projects, Delta Water Systems, Fisheries Monitoring and Management Projects on the Mokelumne River, and Cosumnes Rivers tour.
 
Workshops will include Sustainable Agriculture and Watershed Management, Fluvial Geomorphology, Floodplain Management, and Invasive Species removal. Concurrent sessions will focus on the Recovery Planning Models, the San Joaquin Restoration Plan, Delta Species, Native Trout restoration and conservation,  Central Valley Chinook and Steelhead, Climate Change and Salmonids, Bay Delta Management, Restoring Natural Hydrographs, and Salmonid Education. Central Coast Road Decommissioning & Enhancement Field School October 23-25

Central Coast Salmon Enhancement, Salmonid Restoration Federation, Pacific Watershed Associates and CA Department of Fish and Game are offering the last scheduled Roads and Culverts Field School in the Central Coast area October 23-25, 2007. The field school will address culvert and road drainage practices to protect and benefit steelhead and water quality in the Central Coast region. This course will include several sessions in the field and will focus on proper ditch relief and stream crossing culvert installation as well as installation of critical rolling dips or measures to eliminate stream diversions. Classroom and field methods will highlight appropriate culvert sizing for peak stream flows, sediment and woody debris in transport. The classes will include approaches for addressing potential road fill and landing failures, as well as spoil disposal techniques and illustrate a variety of road bed and ditch drainage approaches. Participants will learn how to properly excavate a stream crossing fill to minimize post excavation erosion and sediment delivery to streams, and how to reduce roadbed width on excessively wide segments of road. This last field school will be held at El Capital Canyon along the beautiful Santa Barbara area coast and the field component will include projects completed or in the planning stages within Santa Barbara County. You won't want to miss this last opportunity to learn from Pacific Watershed Associates Danny Hagans and Bill Weaver and to enjoy the unique surroundings at El Capital Canyon while attending the field school.
