Public Input Opportunity on Klamath Dams to State Water Resources Control Board
The State Water Resources Control Board is beginning the process to determine whether the water behind PacifiCorp's Klamath River dams meets the clean water demands of the federal Clean Water Act. Without a "section 401" permit PacifiCorp cannot obtain a 50-year license to continue operation of the dams, which could lead to dam removal.

27th Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference 2nd Call for Abstracts
Presenter Abstracts Due November 17
The 27th Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference will be held March 4-7, 2009 in Santa Cruz. This year the conference will feature workshops on topics including estuary restoration, fish passage design and implementation, coho use and restoration of off channel habitat, and watershed monitoring and management. All day field tours will include tours of the lower San Lorenzo River: Balancing Habitat, Flood Control, and Public Use, Carmel River restoration projects, Southern Coho Streams and the NOAA lab and broodstock program, Coastal and Santa Clara Valley salmonid creeks, and Coho Salmon and Steelhead Enhancement projects.

Proposition 84 Funds Available for River Parkways and Urban Streams Restoration
The California River Parkways and the Urban Streams Restoration Grant Program Guidelines and Application are now posted. The deadline to apply is November 12.
The Resources Agency and the California Department of Water Resources are pleased to announce the joint release of the guidelines and application for the California River Parkways (RP) and the Urban Streams Restoration (USR) grant programs. Funding for both programs is available through the Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Bond Act of 2006 - Proposition 84. Proposed available funding and timelines are contingent upon enactment of the 2008/09 budget and subsequent budget decisions. There is $30.9 million for River Parkways projects and $9.1 million available for Urban Streams Restoration.

Berkeley River Restoration Symposium
December 6, 2008
The 6th Annual Berkeley River Restoration Symposium will be held Saturday, December 6 from 9 am to 1 pm at Wurster Hall Auditorium, UC Berkeley campus.
The symposium (free and open to the public) features: A keynote talk "The Trinity River, the Peripheral Canal, and the Future of Water in California" by Tom Stokely, Trinity County Planning Department, who draws upon his two decades of experience as an active player in restoration of the Trinity River. Graduate student research projects on topics including post-project appraisal of the Chorro Flats restoration project (San Luis Obispo County) a decade after construction, assessment of riparian vegetation establishment at the Tassajara Ck compound channel project (Alameda County), potential applications of the geomorphically active flood concept to a reach of the lower San Joaquin River, a survey of the effectiveness of instream structures, monitoring of bed mobility and bank erosion as a basis for defining setbacks on Carneros Ck (Napa County), and assessment of surface-groundwater interactions on San Gregorio Ck (San Mateo County).
A panel discussion of issues raised by student research projects featuring leading professionals in the field, including Stephanie Carlson (Dept Environmental Science, Policy, and Management UCB), HanBin Liang (WRECO Consultants), and Manny DaCosta (Alameda County Public Works).
