Salmon River Dives and Spring-run Chinook Symposium

Salmonid Restoration Federation is proud to join with the Salmon River Restoration Council in offering the 2nd Annual Spring-run Chinook Symposium in concert with the Salmon River Spring Chinook Dives. Please join us on the beautiful Salmon River July 24-27 for training and dives, workshops, field tours and presentations on challenges and tools specific to Spring-run Chinook restoration in California, including fish identification, snorkel surveys, fish habitat improvement and fish passage barrier removal projects. Renowned fisheries biologist, Peter Moyle, will offer a presentation on Spring-run Chinook recovery efforts. Stay Saturday July 28 for the Jammin’ for the Salmon benefit concert.


IRWM Implementation Grants Due 8/1/07
The State Water Resources Control Board will be accepting applications online for the RFP/Solicitation IRWM Implementation Grant, Round 2, Step 1 from 6/21/2007 8:00:00 AM through 8/1/2007 11:59:59 PM.

If you have already created a user account to access FAAST for a previous funding cycle, and will be submitting an application on behalf of the same organization, you may use your existing user account to log-in to FAAST.

Restoration Job Announcements 
Solano County RCD is hiring a Watershed Restoration & Education Specialist to oversee and implement all aspects of two creek restoration projects.  This work includes completing bank stabilization and planting designs to improve water quality, reduce weed populations and improve habitat for native wildlife species. This position will also be responsible for contracting and overseeing installation crews and assisting in related field work. Click here to learn more.

26th Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference 
March 5-8, 2008 in Lodi, CA

The 26th Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference will be held March 5-8, 2008 in the northern San Joaquin Valley. The conference will feature field tours with potential destinations including Toulumne River restoration projects, Delta Water Systems, East Bay MUD Fisheries Monitoring and Management and a tour of the Mokelumne River. Workshops will include Fins and Zins: Sustainable Agriculture and Watershed Management, Fluvial Geomorphology, Floodplain Management and Tidal Marsh Restoration, Restoring Natural Hydrographs, and Invasive Species removal. Concurrent sessions will focus on the Delta Smelt, Coho Salmon Recovery efforts, the San Joaquin Restoration Plan, Native Trout restoration, Central Valley Chinook and Steelhead, Recovery Planning models, Climate Change, and Natural Flow Regime and Delta Management. SRF 2008 Conference First Call for Abstracts
Session, Workshop, and Field Tour Abstracts are Due on September 18
The Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference, sponsored by Salmonid Restoration Federation and the Department of Fish and Game, is the premier habitat restoration conference in the Pacific Northwest. The first two days of the conference will be filled with full-day workshops and field tours. A half-day plenary session will be followed by 1.5 days of technical, biological, and policy-related concurrent sessions. This conference focuses on a broad range of salmonid and watershed restoration topics of concern to restoration practitioners, agency scientists, and land planners and owners.

2007 Central Coast Field Schools
August 14-16 in Arroyo Grande, CA and October 23-25 in Santa Barbara, CA
SRF and Central Coast Salmon Enhancement will offer two courses this season addressing culvert and road drainage practices to protect and benefit steelhead and water quality in the Central Coast region with Pacific Watershed Associates. These courses will include several sessions in the field and will focus on proper ditch relief and stream crossing culvert installation as well as installation of critical rolling dips or measures to eliminate stream diversions. Classroom and field methods will highlight appropriate culvert sizing for peak stream flows, sediment and woody debris in transport. The classes will include approaches for addressing potential road fill and landing failures, as well as spoil disposal techniques and illustrate a variety of road bed and ditch drainage approaches. Participants will learn how to properly excavate a stream crossing fill to minimize post excavation erosion and sediment delivery to streams, and how to reduce roadbed width on excessively wide segments of road. 2007 Fish Passage Short Courses
November 7-9 in Santa Cruz, CA and November 13-15 in Sonoma County
SRF, DFG, and FishNet 4C will offer two intensive workshops for engineers, hydrologists, biologists, and environmental planners, and other staff who are involved in the design and implementation of fish passage projects. Each workshop will cover the design and implementation process, including biological considerations, site surveys and geomorphic assessment, state and federal fish passage design guidance, stream simulation design, grade control techniques, retrofitting existing crossings, contracting and implementation, monitoring and adaptation. Instructors include Mike Love, Ross Taylor, and Ken Kozmo Bates. In addition, DFG staff will provide instruction on the DFG/NOAA design standards, and local county staff will be available to present case studies. The workshops include two days in the classroom, comprised of presentations, group exercises and local case studies and a third day will feature field visits to local projects, and a specialized half-day workshop targeted specifically for engineers to explore in more detail the calculations used to develop successful designs.
