Presentation on Klamath River Coho Salmon and Water Supply in the Era of Global Warming
Arcata, December 6

At 10 am on December 6, 2008 there will be a workshop at the Arcata Community Center Senior Room with fisheries biologist Patrick Higgins who will present on the environmental impact report for the Shasta and Scott River coho salmon take permit for agriculture and encourage the public to comment. Professsor Robert Van Kirk will discuss Klamath River water supply and use in the era of global warming.

Admission is free and refreshments will be served. This event is sponsored by the Sierra Club Redwood Chapter, EPIC and the Northcoast Environmental Center. For more information call 822-6918.


Berkeley River Restoration Symposium
December 6, 2008


The 6th Annual Berkeley River Restoration Symposium will be held Saturday, December 6 from 9 am to 1 pm at Wurster Hall Auditorium, UC Berkeley campus.

The symposium (free and open to the public) features: A keynote talk "The Trinity River, the Peripheral Canal, and the Future of Water in California" by Tom Stokely, Trinity County Planning Department, who draws upon his two decades of experience as an active player in restoration of the Trinity River. Graduate student research projects on topics including post-project appraisal of the Chorro Flats restoration project (San Luis Obispo County) a decade after construction, assessment of riparian vegetation establishment at the Tassajara Ck compound channel project (Alameda County), potential applications of the geomorphically active flood concept to a reach of the lower San Joaquin River, a survey of the effectiveness of instream structures, monitoring of bed mobility and bank erosion as a basis for defining setbacks on Carneros Ck (Napa County), and assessment of surface-groundwater interactions on San Gregorio Ck (San Mateo County).

A panel discussion of issues raised by student research projects featuring leading professionals in the field, including Stephanie Carlson (Dept Environmental Science, Policy, and Management UCB), HanBin Liang (WRECO Consultants), and Manny DaCosta (Alameda County Public Works).

27th Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference: Elements of Watershed Restoration
Santa Cruz, CA March 4-7, 2009

The 27th Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference will be held March 4-7, 2009 in Santa Cruz, California. This year the conference will feature workshops on topics including estuary restoration, fish passage design and implementation, coho use and restoration of off channel habitat, watershed monitoring and assessment, and sustainable agriculture: water quality and riparian habitat restoration.

All day field tours will include tours highlighting Resource Management for Steelhead and Coho Salmon Conservation in Santa Cruz County: A Tour of San Lorenzo River and Soquel Projects, Carmel River restoration projects, Southern Coho Streams and the NOAA lab and broodstock program, Coho Salmon and Steelhead Enhancement projects on the North Coast, Dams and Daylighting: Progress and Opportunities in San Francisquito Creek and half-day tours of fish passage projects and sustainable agriculture projects in conjunction with those morning workshops.

Concurrent sessions include:

  • FERC Relicensing Restoration Opportunities
  • Central & South Coast Steelhead: Biology, Genetics, and Recovery Strategies
  • Fire Ecology, Forests, and Fisheries

  • Juvenile Steelhead and Coho Salmon: Central Coast Habitat and Population Research
  • Hydrologic and Geomorphic Legacy Issues: Solutions for the Past and the Future
  • Coho Salmon Recovery and Restoration: Putting Theory into Practice.

This is the premiere habitat restoration conference in the Pacific Northwest and hosting the conference in Santa Cruz affords wonderful opportunities to view projects on the Central Coast and highlight issues that pertain to coastal watershed and coho salmon recovery. The Plenary session will focus on the state of commercial fisheries in California and elements of watershed restoration. SRF Presents Awards for Outstanding Achievements in the Salmonid Restoration Field. If you would like to nominate someone for the Restorationist of the Year award, the Lifetime Achievement award or the Golden Pipe award, please submit 200 words describing the accomplishments of the nominee by February 4, 2008 to srf@calsalmon.org

If you are interested in presenting at the 2009 Salmonid Restoration Conference Poster Session, scheduled for Friday evening, March 6th, please contact Francine Allen at francine@calsalmon.org . If you would like to submit a poster abstract for the Proceedings, please email your abstract to srf@calsalmon.org by December 15.
