SRF is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection
and restoration of California's salmon, steelhead, and trout populations
and their habitat. SRF educates individuals, organizations, and
agencies about innovative techniques for salmonid restoration
by sponsoring an annual conference in California and operating
technical field schools. SRF is devoted to educating the community
on the ecology and economy of restoring natural resources for
future generations of fish and people. We are interested in building
a sustainable economy in rural areas so people in the restoration
field can make a living wage while restoring the natural environment.
THE SALMONID RESTORATION FEDERATION...
...was founded in 1987 by members of several local restoration
groups who wanted to create an information clearinghouse for groups
like theirs, and to organize an annual conference. The Federation
is a nonprofit organization funded by membership dues, donations,
workshop and conference fees.
Our two main objectives are:
- to improve the effectiveness of California's salmonid restoration
efforts
- and to develop the public and political support that is essential
for maintaining and expanding restoration program efforts.
Salmon, steelhead, and trout restoration projects fall into three
general categories: Habitat restoration and enhancement, fish
population enhancement (pond rearing operations), and community
outreach and public education programs. These projects are undertaken
primarily by private contractors (mainly nonprofits, American
Indian tribes, and local governments) and most are state grant
funded.

SERVICES
We try to optimize the benefits of these efforts by providing
the restoration community with a variety of services including:
- Operating the Salmonid Stream Habitat Restoration Field School
- Producing an annual statewide salmonid restoration conference
and technical workshops
- Publishing a newsletter
- Providing information referral services
- Acting as a liaison between restoration groups and California
- Department of Fish and Game
ADVOCACY
The Federation's government relations and public affairs activities
have grown considerably in recent years.
We:
- Participate in the development of state and federal salmonid
fishery restorations plans, objectives and policies;
- Promote public involvement in the restoration of California's
salmonid fisheries;
- and advocate changes in key government policies and regulations
that hinder or obstruct restoration of California's salmonid
fisheries.
We have also worked tirelessly to protect existing funding and develop
additional funding for CDFG's salmon and steelhead and trout restoration
programs and associated contracts and grants programs.
To achieve this objective we:
- Inform our state representatives and administrative officials
of fish restoration benefits and issues;
- Educate the public about the need to restore habitat, the
challenges associated with restoring fisheries and the broad
scope of fish restoration activities;
- Encourage citizens to inform their elected representatives
of their support for fisheries restoration
HOW YOU CAN HELP
We need your support to make our efforts succeed. Every person who
joins the Federation increases our effectiveness by strengthening
our representative voice and providing us with essential financial
support. We invite you to join the Federation and help us facilitate
the transformation of today's degraded streams and rivers into the
healthy, habitat rich, productive aquatic environments of tomorrow.
Members are kept informed of upcoming public hearings and pending
legislation and administrative decisions that will affect statewide
restoration efforts and we will tell you how to play an active role
in fish restoration politics. Members receive our newsletter, are
notified of upcoming workshops and classes, and are sent advance
invitations to our annual conference. In addition, joining the Federation
qualifies individuals for conference and field school registration
fee discounts.
